Microsoft Stiffening Its China Ranks

The hires will be in R&D, sales and marketing and services

By next July Microsoft means to hire another thousand people in China where it already has a staff of 4,500, according to what Ralph Haupter, CEO of Microsoft's Greater China unit, told the press in Beijing.

The hires will be in R&D, sales and marketing and services.

It also means to increase its $500 million-a-year R&D budget there by 15%. That would include a 15% increase in Microsoft's 3,000 Chinese researchers who mostly work on products for the global market. Microsoft wants to develop more Chinese products.

The company, which is also looking to attract local developers to write apps, wants to expand its cloud and software sales as well as Windows 8-based gadgets, but especially cloud.

It has 100,000 commercial customers using private clouds and is getting ready to go into the public cloud business to peddle services to consumers.

The cloud may ultimately defeat Chinese pirates long a problem for Microsoft and others.

There are thought to be 538 million Chinese online, 388 million of whom are using wireless devices.
